Hello, my name is Adam Daviau and I am your End-of-Life Doula. My road to becoming an End-of-Life Doula took quite some time. I grew up in a household with two very loving parents Roger and Fleurette (Flo) Daviau. They were very caring and supportive parents. My parents taught me that it was important to care for others and not to be afraid of our emotions.
Fast forward to December 2007 when my Dad was diagnosed with cancer. He asked me to be his executor and decision maker. This responsibility was put on me when I was 26 and had no idea what I was doing. Working with my Dad we went and dealt with the bank, discussed his wants regarding how to celebrate his life and the disposition of his body. When dealing with the bank, family and decisions on all aspects from treatment to his celebration, I quickly realized that it is not easy to do without guidance and support. My Dad had some negative experiences that could have been avoided or at least been lessened with the help of an End-of-Life Doula.
After my Dad passed in March 2008, I wanted to help others not experience what my Dad experienced. At the time I did not know what it was I needed to do but I just knew I had to do something. It was not until I heard a commercial about a Death Doula on the radio in 2018 while driving in London, Ontario that it hit me. I called my wife and told her right away, I knew what my calling was. I started researching becoming a Death Doula and everything involved while working various jobs from running businesses to blue collar work. Finally in the summer of 2024 as I was researching schools in Canada and came across Rhodes Wellness College. Rhodes had the most comprehensive course and I knew if I was going to follow my calling this was where I had to attend.
I have graduated from Rhodes Wellness College in the End-of-Life Doula program and I am now a Professional Teacher’s Aid in the program. I am also expanding my knowledge in Support for Veterans at End-of-Life.
